Free Course on the Future of Education from UCL

If you are a teacher in the UK, you have probably thought about the future direction of teaching. With the government, the teaching unions, and the media in a seemingly never-ending, three-way propaganda scrap, you could be forgiven for being unsure about where teaching is heading.

Luckily, UCL are on hand to provide a brilliant module called “What future for education”. The course is offered through e-learning website which partners with some of the world’s leading universities: Princeton, Stanford, University of Tokyo, Johns Hopkins, the National University of Singapore, Yale, and Columbia to name a few.  This course is run by Dr Claire Brooks from the Institute of Education – so you know the content is of the highest standard.

The course prospectus says:

“Through this course you will start to critically examine your own ideas about education, teaching and learning. The critique will be developed through engagement with theories and ideas developed through educational research. You will be encouraged to use these ideas to challenge or support your own ideas about education.”

Incredibly the course is completely free. By signing up you get access to videos, a portfolio dashboard, and tutor support, as well as a forum filled with hundreds of other eager teachers exchanging ideas. 

The course is designed to last 6 weeks but is self-paced, meaning you can start when you want and finish when you want. There are suggested deadlines to keep you on track if you need that extra motivation!

Completing the course grants you a certificate from Coursera but, more importantly, a better understanding of your thoughts on the future of teaching.

If you want to learn more about education but prefer the ‘here and now’ to ‘what if’, there are lots more courses on the website, and indeed all around the internet. Kahn Academy is a very respected institute, is very popular, and even TED talks can be insightful and productive!
