This Special Needs College for students aged 16+ with visual impairments is seeking to appoint a University Graduate to support their students. The schools mission statement is to create challenging learning opportunities for people with visual impairment and/or other disabilities to realise their potential to work and to live independently. You will take an active role in supporting and helping students develop their social and academic skills, both on a 1-2-1 basis and in groups

The school itself is found to the West of Birmingham not far from the M5 and has excellent transport links with buses stopping right outside the College. The college have excellent facilities both relating to learning and leisure which support the development of pupils learning and social skills. The original building on the site is currently used for classrooms, which are well sized, and also contains a large hall used for discos and performances of drama or music for fellow students, families and friends of the College. There is a modern dining room that serves great food at lunchtime and an evening meal Monday to Friday. The school also have a new Centre on site with a spacious new art room, recording studio and the Library. The library is equipped with the latest IT and assistive technology and has a multitude of work and leisure material in standard print, large print, braille and audio. The centre is so large that it also has classrooms for numeracy, literacy, health and social care, preparation for life and braille. Another new building on the campus is the Technology Centre which is only a couple of years old. It has plenty of fast computers with Internet access, assistive technology, computer aided design (CAD) software and interactive wall projectors. There is also the Health Centre which has the very latest exercise equipment, free weights and two 'Hi Tech' Power Plates.

Over the last 10 years the college have seen an increasing number of students who have Autistic Spectrum Disorders. You will be required to support the individual learning plans of students within a structured learning environment whilst helping students develop strategies to cope with situations that they will later encounter in later life. The college provide a warm and friendly environment with a family feel to it, with staff taking the time and effort to make everyone feel welcome whilst supporting each other in setting and maintaining the high standards that permeates every aspect of the College.
