PRIMARY TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

The term Primary Teacher covers all class teacher roles across the Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 covering Nursery, Reception and Years 1-6. Usually assigned to one class, a Primary Teacher will follow the curriculum and deliver lessons on a variety of subjects with a special focus on Literacy and Numeracy.

A Primary Teacher’s main goals will be to link pupils' knowledge to their earlier learning to provide consistency in their education, and develop new ways to encourage, challenge and inspire pupils in order to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Typical duties for a Primary Teacher may include:

  • Taking responsibility for the progress, behaviour and development of a class.
  • Planning lessons on a variety of subjects related to the up-to-date curriculum.
  • Organising the classroom displays and learning resources.
  • Preparing and marking work to facilitate positive pupil development.
  • Providing feedback to parents and carers on a pupil's progress at parents evenings and other meetings.
  • Liaising with parents, governors and professionals such as education welfare officers and educational psychologists, if required.
  • Getting involved in whole school and extracurricular activities.
