Salary

A Head of Year position comes with TLR in addition to a usual salary. This can mean you are paid up to £12,000 extra depending on the school, your level of experience and the year group you manage.

Experience required

All Head of Year positions will require you to have qualified teacher status, teaching experience and good organisational skills. However it is not unheard of for NQTs to be promoted to Head of Year roles if they are up for the challenge.

Previous jobs

It is essential to have qualified teacher status to start a Head of Year role. Although Head of Year can be the first TLR role, the most successful applicants will have proved their capabilities as managers of extracurricular and schoolwide activities.

Opportunities afterwards

A Head of Year can progress to roles with more TLR or middle management roles like department heads. They can then become members of the senior leadership team and work as Deputy Head Teaches or Head Teachers.

Professional Bodies and Unions

Most teaching unions like NUT and NASUWT will all accept memberships from Head of Year Teachers. They can also get in contact with the Teacher Support Network (TSN) which is available for all educational professionals.
